Dr. Elly Toyoda, a native of Osaka, Japan, has performed in major festivals in Asia, Europe, and North America. She holds her Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory, where she studied with Marilyn McDonald on both modern and baroque violin, was elected membership to the National Music Honor Society for her academic and artistic achievements, and studied for a semester in Vienna, Austria, supported by the Thomastik-Infeld City of Music Scholarship and the Fine Arts Scholarship. She earned her Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Syoko Aki, served as concertmistress of the orchestra, was a finalist of their concerto competition, and received the school’s Alumni Prize. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers University, where she studied with Yura Lee, wrote her doctoral thesis Musical Paradoxes in the Violin Works of Olivier Messiaen, and graduated with the Irene Alm Memorial Prize and the Music Department Award, the school’s highest honors, in recognition of excellence in performance and scholarly research.
An avid supporter of contemporary music, Dr. Toyoda was awarded the Prix de Musique Contemporaine by the Fontainebleau Schools, has appeared on programs at the National Sawdust, Le Poisson Rouge, and the Elb Philharmonie in Germany, and has premiered numerous works through the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Lucerne Festival, Massachusetts International Festival of the Arts, Lake George Music Festival, and Talis Festival. She is featured in Martin Bresnick’s Album “More Essential Martin Bresnick: The Planet on the Table” and in David Lang’s Album “shade” released as a CD and through all digital platforms by Cantaloupe Records, a label created by the Bang on a Can organization. She is also a frequent collaborator with Eighth Blackbird, the 4-time Grammy award-winning contemporary music ensemble, including a performance on the Gettysburg College campus in February 2020 and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, which was reviewed positively by the Washington Post.
Her work in new music is supported by her extensive experience performing baroque, classical, and romantic music in venues and festivals worldwide. She has been a featured soloist in a program of baroque concertos performed by Rutgers faculty, and has performed standard repertory through solo and chamber recitals at the Château Fontainebleau in France, the Oratorio dei Disciplinanti in Italy, and the Symphony Hall and the Ishikawa Ongakudo in Japan, among others. Other public appearances include WFMT radio, NPR, and WGBY television. She was a semi-finalist of the 2017 Gershwin International Music Competition, and a finalist of the 2018 Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.
Dr. Toyoda currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Violin at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College teaching violin, chamber music, music theory, and Introduction to Contemporary Music. She was previously a Part-Time Lecturer teaching 20th and 21st-century Performance Practice at Rutgers University, faculty-artist for Yale School of Music’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, violin and viola faculty member at SpeakMusic Conservatory and Lindeblad School of Music, a secondary violin instructor at Oberlin and Yale, and a guest artist for teaching masterclasses at the University of Oklahoma and at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College.

１６歳よりアメリカでの留学生活をインターロッケン芸術高校で開始し、卒業時にFine Arts Awardを受賞。その後オーバリン音楽院(Oberlin Conservatory of Music)でマクドナルド・マリリン教授よりバロックバイオリンと現代バイオリンの指導を受け、Thomastik-Infeld City of Music とFine Arts の奨学金の元でウィーンでの交換留学も果たす。オーバリンで学士号を３年半で取得し、学業と実技の高評価により、全国音楽オナーズ学会（National Music Honors Society）に抜擢。その後、イェール大学音楽院(Yale School of Music)より全額奨学金及び生活費を受け、安芸晶子教授の門下で修士課程を開始。在学中、イェール交響楽団の首席に抜擢され、Woolsey Hallコンクールの決勝へ進出し、修士号取得と共にAlumni Prizeを受賞。卒業後ニューヨーク市に移住し、現地で演奏活動を開始。同時にラトガース大学でリー・ユラ教授の指導を受け、博士号を３年で取得し、卒業時には、最も優秀な演奏家と研究家に授与されるIrene Alm Memorial Prize 及びMusic Department Awardを受賞。
豊田は幅広い分野で活躍している中、最近は現代音楽の演奏活動に最も励んでいる。その活動はシカゴのラジオ番組やマサチューセッツのテレビニュースでの出演などで記録されている。その他、フランスのフォンテーヌブロー校より現代音楽賞を受賞し、スイス、ドイツ、イタリア、アメリカで多数の新作品の世界初演を果たしている。更に、グラミー賞を4度受賞した現代アンサンブル、Eighth Blackbirdと全国ツアーをし、ワシントンの国立美術館での演奏会は米名門紙ワシントン・ポストより高評価を受ける。ツアー中、ペンシルベニアやオクラホマの大学での演奏及び公開マスタークラスを行う。そして来年は、Cantaloupe Recordsのラベルで発売される作曲家ブレスニック・マーティンのアルバムを通じて、CDデビューを果たす。
日本では、朝日新聞の推薦演奏会やヴァイオリニスト五嶋みどり率いるプログラム等で演奏し、これらのコンサートはシンフォニーホール、フェスティバルホール、N H Kホール等で開催された。そして２０１４年に名門セミナーとして知られるいしかわミュージックアカデミーのマスタークラス受講生に選抜され、国内外で著名なマスタークラス講師陣のレッスンを受け、石川県立音楽堂のコンサートホールで独奏を行った。
現在はペンシルバニア州のゲティスバーグ大学、サンダーマン音楽院（Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College）で客員助教授として勤め、ヴァイオリン、室内楽、音楽史の指導をしている。同時にラトガース大学の非常勤講師として音楽奏法の授業を担当している。例年はイェール大学及びオーバリン大学でヴァイオリンの副講師として、また、ラトガース大学においても楽典の助手講師を勤め、ニューヨーク及びニュージャージー州の音楽学校でヴァイオリンとビオラを教えるなど、指導者として全国レベルで活躍している。
